One of the biggest mistakes Pilates instructors and more importantly Pilates educators and influencers make is treating spring settings as recipes.
Three reds for Footwork. One red for Arms. One red and one blue for Scooter. Two red for Long Stretch.
The problem with this approach is that it encourages memorisation rather than understanding - and assumes uniformity in our client's weight/strength ratio which is a deeply flawed assumption
When we understand the Law of the Spring, we no longer need to memorise quite so much.
Instead, we can begin reasoning our way through movement.
The Law
The Law of the Spring is simple: The further out the bed travels, the more spring tension there is.
This is always true. How this affects the movement, depends on the movement - and the client.
Every spring attached to a Reformer becomes progressively tighter as it lengthens. As the carriage moves away from the stopper, the spring stretches. As the spring stretches, tension increases.
That tension wants to pull the carriage back home.
This is not a Pilates principle. It is simply the nature of springs.
The spring does not care whether we are doing Footwork, Long Stretch, Scooter or Rowing, the spring obeys the same rule every time.
The further it stretches, the more tension it creates.
Why This Matters
Many instructors stop here (and more importantly Pilates educators and influencers).
They understand that spring tension increases, but then they make a mistake.
They think in only one direction: More spring tension always makes the exercise harder.
This is not true.
And this is where the Law becomes interesting.
The law itself never changes: More carriage travel = more spring tension.
But the effect of that increased tension depends entirely on the movement being performed (and the client performing it).
This is where individual programming within a group begins.
The Spring Doesnβt Change, the Movement Changes.
Imagine two different exercises.
In both exercises, the carriage travels further from the stopper. In both exercises, spring tension increases.
The law remains exactly the same.
But the consequence may be completely different.
In one movement: The springs may assist the client.
In another: The springs may resist the client.
In another: The springs may increase stability.
In another: The springs may reduce stability.
The spring behaves identically.
The movement determines whether that tension helps or hinders the task.
This is one of the most important distinctions a Reformer instructor can understand.
